Marie Delores Adams

Marie Adams, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend passed away peacefully in North Charleston, South Carolina on August 22, 2023. Born to Leroy and Ethel Adams on July 24, 1938, in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Marie’s life journey unfolded in New York City after immigrating with her family at age 14. After graduating from the High School of Commerce in 1956, she met and married Earl Christian, Jr. in 1957, together they had six children: Michael, Michelle, Maxine, Mark, Mitchell, and Marvin; they later divorced. While raising a family, Marie worked at a family day care center, starting as a teacher’s aide and later advancing to family counselor. Her nurturing spirit was evident in her love of educating and comforting all children – those she raised, those she worked with, and her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Aunt Bre.” In 1970, she began her career at New York Hospital, retiring in 2000 after twenty-three years of dedicated service. As a retiree, in 2006 Marie moved to Summerville, South Carolina where she was an active member of the local senior center for many years. Retirement allowed her to thoroughly enjoy the simplest pleasures in life – sitting outside with family and friends soaking up the sun. Marie found great joy in taking family vacations and sharing cherished moments with loved ones. The delicious meals she created were a staple at holiday celebrations and family gatherings. She was frequently amused at the attempts her children and grandchildren would make trying to perfect her recipes. Marie is survived by her children Michael (Lisa) Christian, Michelle Christian, Maxine Christian, Mark (Sadqua) Christian, Mitchell (Shavon) Christian, and Marvin (LaTarsha) Christian, 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sisters Guita, Marva, Jean, and Shirley, and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Marie is preceded in death by her parents Leroy and Ethel Adams, brother Elroy Adams, sister Eleanor Adams, grandson Michael A. “Mikey” Christian, nephews Robert “Bobby” Gilpin, Jonathan Adams, and Neil Acosta. Marie will be honored with a private committal service at Dorchester Memory Gardens, followed by a gathering in celebration of her life. Visiting hours will be held at James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Friday, September 1, 2023 from 6-8pm.
