Vernon O'Quinn

Vernon O’Quinn, 80, of Summerville, SC, husband of Beatrice “Tanner” Grooms O’Quinn, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Friends and family may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Friday, September 6, 2013 from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock PM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10 o’clock AM at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1163 Beidler Forest Road, Dorchester, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Amedisys Hospice Care, 1027 Physicians Drive, Suite 240, Charleston, SC 29414. Vernon was born on August 12, 1933 in Branchville, SC son of the late Robert Benjamin O’Quinn and Minnie Lee (Carter) O’Quinn. Vernon worked many years at Raybestos Manhatten (Garco) before going to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He worked in shop in 31 for over 21 years before he retired in June 1993. Vernon was in the Army during the early 1950’s and retired from the Army National Guard in August of 1993 with the rank of Sergeant with the 678th Engineering Detachment. Vernon was also a lifetime member of the Masons at Hamelton Lodge 332 in North Charleston. Vernon enjoyed many hobbies before he became ill such as fishing, boating, auto mechanics, watching the Atlanta Braves, NASCAR, just getting out and driving on Sundays and camping. Surviving in addition to his wife Beatrice of 60 years are, his son Charles “Bubba” (Anna) O’Quinn of Harleyville, SC, his daughters, Peggy Wiggins of North Charleston and Ann Newman (Michael) of Kettering, OH. Vernon is also survived by his younger brother Oscar (Connie) O’Quinn and his sister Virginia Harrison (Bob) as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members. Vernon was also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren; Christina O’Quinn, April (Michael) Jackson, Bradly (Jennifer) Wiggins, Kenneth Wiggins, Michael Newman, II and Brittany Newman, as well as five great grandchildren, Clayton Jackson, Christian Newman, Tianna Walker, Garrison and Coleman Wiggins.
