Rev. Charles Edwin Sturm

Rev. Charles Edwin Sturm, 87, of Summerville, husband of Barbara Ann (Brown) Sturm, passed away quietly on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at his home. Charlie was born on September 30, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Max and Nina (Thompson) Sturm. In high school he became a member of the Mohawk Club, a beloved social group whose members became his life-long friends. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and a Master’s degree in Divinity from Bexley Hall Divinity School of Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. He served in the United States Army in Japan (peace time, post-WWII). Charlie presided as minister at Trinity Episcopal in West Branch, MI, All Saints in Pontiac, MI, St. John’s in Clinton, MI, St. John’s in Howell, MI, St. Paul’s in Brighton, MI, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Temecula, CA and served as a missionary pastor to the islands of St. Kitts and Trinidad. He was the general manager at Emrich Conference Center in Brighton, MI. Charlie volunteered in the Katrina Relief Mission and did mission work in Nicaragua. He was an active member in Kairos Prison Ministry, a member of the Diocese S.C., and St. George’s Episcopal Church in Summerville. Charlie was a regular patron at the YMCA in Summerville and played music in the Sunday Jammers group. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and played the guitar at Life Care of Charleston. He was a Friend of Bill W for over 30 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife Barbara of 40 years, are: two sons: Charles Sturm, Jr. (Ana) of Tampa, FL and David Sturm (deChantal) of Williamston, MI; three daughters: Isabelle von Sturm of Toledo, OH, Brenda Clogston (Chester) of Charleston and Lynn Cortright (Michael) of Charleston; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister: Jean Gillis of Florida; brother: Richard Sturm of Florida. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11 o’clock AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston.
