Glenn B. Eckert

Glenn B. Eckert, 73, of Summerville, husband of Frances Patrick Eckert, passed away Saturday morning, July 21, 2012 at Trident Medical Center. Mr. Eckert was born in Akron, Ohio on the 26th of December, 1938, son of the late Charles and Virginia Eckert of Akron, Ohio and brother of the late John A. Herbstreet of Florida and brother of the late William S. Eckert of Akron, Ohio, and late sisters, Penelope C. Finlaw of Akron, Ohio and Mary B. Eckert of Akron, Ohio. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Thomas Parks (Mary) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, stepsons, Rodney Patrick of Summerville, Joel Patrick (Diane) of San Antonio, Tx and step daughter, Kimberly P. Meyer (Lee) of Summerville, brother-in-law, Mack Odell Austin (Ann) of Cross and several grandchildren. Mr. Eckert entered the United States Navy in 1956 in Akron, Ohio. He served on the following ships and stations during his 20 year career. He went to training in the Great Lakes, Ill in an all Ohio Company. After training in April of 1956, he reported to the Naval Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Virginia. In June of 1956, he was transferred to the USS Talbot County LST 1153. In May of 1957, he was transferred to the Pre-Com Detail for the USS Ranger CVA 61 and put her in commission in July of 1957. USS Fred T. Berry DDE 858, USS Barry DDG 933, Naval Underwater Weapons Station in Newport, RI, Naval Support Activity Det. “B” Can-Tho, Republic of Vietnam from 1967 to April 1968, USS Sampson DDG 10, USS James C. Owens DD 776, USS Bordelon DD 881, USS Yellowstone AD27, Naval Base Charleston, South Carolina, and the USS Sellers DDG 11. He retired in 1975 from the Navy and in 1980 went to work for the Charleston Naval Shipyard until 1991, he was transferred to the Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Georgia. In 2004 he retired after 25 years with the DOD. He was awarded the following during his Navy career. Purple Heart, Navy Achievement, Good Conduct (2), National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Vietnam Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign, Hazardous Duty Metal. Other past employers include working with Dorchester County EMS and as a Reserve Officer for Summerville Police Department and also Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 11 o’clock at Old Fort Baptist Church, Summerville.
