Karen Margaret Metzger

Karen Margaret Metzger (née Scanland), 79, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away on May 6, 2024. She was born on June 29, 1944, in Sarasota, Florida. Karen was an adoring wife to Lt Col Frank L. Metzger, USAF, retired. She was a proud mother of her children Karina (Cox) Boulle, Karla Cox, Krissa (Cox) Garnel, and Martin Cox, all from her first marriage to Martin B. Cox. She cherished her seven grandchildren, Dominique Boulle, Francis Boulle, Lilliane Boulle, Jourdan Cox, Byron Cox, Hunter Cox, Emma Garnel, Max Garnel, and her great grandson, Atlas Boulle-Bintcliffe. Karen is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandson, brother Scott, nieces Teresa and Elizabeth. She is preceded in death by her parents, USN Capn Francis Worth Scanland and Karina (Erickson) Scanland, and her brothers Francis Scanland and Thomas Scanland. She graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston, South Carolina, and went on to earn a BA in Political Science from the University of West Florida and a Masters in Political Science from Louisiana State University. Karen later excelled in her career, reaching Vice President of Temple-Inland, a real estate development company, before retiring. One of the greatest joys of Karen's later years was reconnecting with Frank, her high school sweetheart from her Ashley Hall days. From the moment they found each other again eight years ago, they spent their time travelling, watching movies, and going to the beach together. She also traveled extensively to England, Scotland, and France several times over 30 years, visiting her daughter and three grandchildren who live in Europe. A woman of many talents and interests, Karen played classical piano to concert standard and, as her children grew up, would start every Saturday morning playing the classics for hours, waking up the household to the sounds of Bach, Chopin, and Beethoven. She was an also an excellent cribbage and bridge player, teaching her children how to be worthy opponents. Karen found solace and community at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Summerville, South Carolina, where she worshipped with Frank. Her faith was an integral part of her life. Visitation will take place Sunday, May 12th, 6-8pm at James Dyal Funeral Home. Memorial services for Karen will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Monday, May 13th at 11am. Karen Margaret Metzger was a beautiful person who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.
