Lawrence Thomas “Tom” Atchison, 83, husband of Debra West Atchison, died of cancer and passed away peacefully and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 12, 2017, with family and friends at his side. Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 6 to 8 o’clock, at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 2 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel. Officiated by Rev. Douglas Nolan Shoulz, Brother in Law, Rev. Richard Ivan West, Brother in Law and Dr. Tommy Meador, his Pastor. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville. Tom was born September 22, 1933 in Birmingham, AL, son of the late Frank W. Atchison and Ida E. Rain Atchison. Tom graduated from Woodland High School, Birmingham, AL. He served in Korea with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Tom worked in the Engineering Department of American Bridge a Division of US Steel for ten years in Birmingham, AL. He moved to Charleston from Birmingham, AL in 1964. Tom and his brother John, owned and operated Atchison Realty Company for twenty five years. Tom was past president of the Charleston Trident Board of Realtors in 1981 and Realtor of the Year in 1983. Tom was a past president of the North Charleston Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Tom joined Prudential Carolina Real Estate in 1990 and managed the Summerville Office for nine years, which later became Carolina One Real Estate where Tom retired as a Senior Manager in 2008. Tom was a member of Northwood Baptist Church and Adult Life Connection Group at Northwood. Tom enjoyed all types of Antiques and Collectibles, coin collecting and music. Tom had a keen quick wit and was loved for his humble and thankful spirit and his ability to remember almost everyone he had ever met. Survivors include his wife and Love of his life for twenty six years, Debra West Atchison, one daughter: Deborah A. Gaskins, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two sisters: Margaret Wood and Emma Atchison, and Sister in Law: Jane Atchison. Tom was predeceased by one son: Lawrence T. “Larry” Atchison, Jr., three brothers: Frank (Freddie), Jim (Jean) and John and three sisters: Mary Hollingsworth (Aubrey), Matt Owens (John) and Hazel Bonner (Tom) and Son-in-Law: James “Jimmy” Gaskins.
