Mary Barteet Nelson

Mary Barteet Nelson, 73, of Meggett, wife of Haywood “Woody” Nelson, passed away on March 9, 2019 at Roper Hospital. Family and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Monday, March 18, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 4744 Highway 165, Meggett, SC 29449. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday March 19, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, 4981 Chapel Hill Rd, Hollywood, SC 29449. Mary was born on May 13, 1945 in Pacolet Mills, SC, daughter of the late Isaac Wallace and Sara Wells White. She graduated from Pacolet Mills High School and received her Associate’s Degree from Spartanburg Methodist College. She married her late husband Raymond Eugene Barteet, Sr., in 1965, and they moved to Meggett. She was an active member of Ravenel United Methodist Church. She was the previous Director of Music at First Baptist Church of Hollywood. She volunteered at many community organizations including My Sister’s House, the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston, and the Charleston County Public Library. Surviving in an addition to Haywood are daughter: Mary Allison Barteet of Meggett; two sons: Raymond E. Barteet, Jr. of Charleston and Charles Cody Barteet (Miranda) of London, Ontario; five grandsons: Raymond “Trey” E. Barteet, III and Joshua R. Barteet along with their mother, Jodi Svoboda Barteet, all of Charleston; Sawyer Green Barteet, Owen Green Barteet, and Graeme Green Barteet of London, Ontario; her brother Ronald White (Lilia) and many nieces and nephews; and her stepdaughters, Karen Tzanetopoulos, Janet Nelson, and Lori Nelson. Mary was committed to her family. She was her grandsons’ biggest supporter, attending as many of their athletic, artistic, and scholastic events as possible. Being Trey, Josh, Sawyer, Owen, ad Graeme’s “Yetta” was the most important role to her. Mary was an avid reader with an inquisitive spirit. She loved to travel and to learn new things; she possessed a curiosity for life that she instilled in her children and grandsons.
