Ruby Utsey Bell

Ruby Utsey Bell, 96, of Summerville, entered into the church triumphant on Monday, August 22, 2011. She was the daughter of Clarence Utsey and Daisy Westbury Utsey, and was born in Harleyville, SC on July 22, 1915. Ruby grew up in Harleyville and graduated from Harleyville Schools in 1931. She then worked in her father’s store until she was 23 years old at which time she married Edward Bert Bell from Summerville. They were married 56 wonderful years. Ruby worked as the Supervisor for Summerville Elementary Lunchroom for 20 years and was the Superintendent of the Primary Dept. at Summerville Baptist Church for many, many years. She had been on the Joy Fellowship Committee at Summerville Baptist Church and was one of their oldest members at the time of her death. Ruby was a very devoted, Christian wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor and friend to those who knew her and will be sadly missed. Books and flowers were always a joy and comfort to her as well as making cakes. Her years were many and her life was good. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and best friend, Bert Bell, and her siblings Myrtle Utsey Utsey, Marjorie Utsey Brown, Wesley Utsey, Horace Utsey, and Willard Utsey. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Bell McFalls (Sam) from Durham, NC and Deborah Bell Clayton (Ron) from Summerville; She leaves 5 grandchildren, Chip McFalls, Eddie McFalls, Candy Clayton Smith, Lea Anne McFalls West, and Kristy Clayton Coakley. Seven great grand children survive her: Adam Smith, Thomas McFalls, Samuel McFalls, Matthew West, Gavin Smith, Ruby Isabelle McFalls, Lauren Anne West. Ruby was known as “Gom” to her grands and was especially good at giving them all Hershey’s kisses and homemade chocolate cake with many hugs. Her memory is one that we will all cherish until we join her once again. Flowers will be delighted or contributions made in her name would be welcomed to the Summerville Baptist Church Library or Hospice Center of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Boulevard, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 12 o’clock PM at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville. The family will welcome visitors one hour before the service, starting at 11 o’clock AM in the church sanctuary at Summerville Baptist Church.
