Ruby Lillian Speer

Ruby Lillian Speer, 92, of Summerville, wife of Richard I. Speer, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at The Village of Summerville. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 2 o’clock PM at The Village of Summerville Chapel, 201 W. 9th N. Street, Summerville. A private graveside service will be held at Dorchester Memory Gardens. Ruby was born on March 30, 1923 in Phoenix, AZ daughter of the late Albert and Pearl Anne Morden. She graduated from the School of Nursing in Little Rock, AK where she received her degree as a registered nurse. Ruby was a veteran of the United States Navy where she served as a nurse in Bethesda, MD. She also worked at the Veteran’s Hospital where she worked with military servicemen who had been injured. She then retired after 35 years as a Labor and Delivery nurse, most of those years served at Tallahassee Memorial in Tallahassee, FL. She was present for the birth of all five of her grandchildren. Ruby loved the beach, loved her lipstick and loved movie nights where she enjoyed her Champagne and Red Wine and wearing Lilly Pulitzer. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching her favorite game show, Jeopardy. She was an avid Arkansas Razorback and Florida State Seminole fan. She was known for her great sense of humor. Most importantly she loved being with her family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the physicians, nurses and all of the wonderful caregivers who cared for our Mother and Grandmother during her golden years. Surviving in addition to her husband Richard of 66 years who was the love of her life are: two children: Richard “Dick” Speer (Kathy) of Tallahassee, FL and Betty Spicer of Summerville; six grandchildren: Brandon Speer, Kristien Pagan (Miguel), Bret Spicer (Shannon), Stacey Smith (Drew) and Lisa Holcombe (Daniel), Bridget Royster (Ricky); nine great grandchildren: Jace Speer, Annelise and Spicer Pagan, Lillian and Lila Ruby Holcombe, Andrew and Hayes Smith, Liam Speer and Cooper Royster; brother: Alvin Morden; nephew: John Morden (Sue); sister in law: Jean Largent. She was predeceased by her son in law, Cmdr. Allen Spicer, sisters, Mary Reque, Ruth Darnell and Susan Taylor, brothers, Col. Roy Morden and John Morden.
