Susan Kaye Bishop Cripps

Susan Kaye Bishop Cripps, 73, passed away unexpectedly on June 10, 2025. Born on May 21, 1952, in Cumberland, Maryland, she grew up in Keyser, WV and always considered that to be her true home; proven by her life long love of WVU Football-Go Mountaineers! She lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her profession, and the community she served for nearly five decades. Susan earned a master’s degree in Speech Pathology from West Virginia University and devoted her professional life to helping others. She was a loyal employee of The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs at The Coastal Center in Summerville for an extraordinary 49 years. Her long-standing commitment to this work reflected not only her expertise but also her deep compassion and unwavering sense of purpose. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and a valued friend whose presence brought warmth and strength to those around her. Susan is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Blackwell of Seneca, SC, and Jessica van Heumen (Jason) of Ladson, SC; grandchildren Cassidy Cripps, Sarah Cripps, Emmaline Blackwell, and Nathan Cripps; and her sister Dawn Downey of Keyser, WV. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her with love. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Harold E. Bishop Jr. and Virginia (Crump) Bishop. In her spare time, Susan enjoyed collecting and taking donations to Dorchester Paws, a local animal shelter; and taking her grandchildren shopping for food items and adding them to the many Blessing Boxes located around town. She also enjoyed cross stitching, reading, and watching her favorite movies with her favorite people. And she loved elephants. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched—both personally and professionally—and through the enduring love of her family. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her. A Visitation will be held on Thursday-June 19, 2025, from 05:00 PM to 06:00 PM at James A Dyal Funeral Home located at 303 S Main Street in Summerville, SC. A Memorial Service will be held immediately following in the chapel at the same location.
