Wallace Raymond Matthews

Wallace Raymond Matthews, 92, of Goose Creek, widower of Cora Mae Matthews, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at White Oak Manor in North Charleston. Friends and family may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 1 o’clock PM at Deer Park Baptist Church, 8875 University Boulevard, North Charleston. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in North Charleston. Wallace was born on to a farming family in the Florence county community of Coward, SC. He was a veteran of WWII and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and other commendations. He was married to Cora M. Poston for 69 years and had six children. Most of his working life he was a truck driver. He was a member of the teamsters union and retired from McLean Trucking Company. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking and especially gardening. Many thought he was the best gardener in the community and he gave away much of what he grew. He was a loving grandfather and great grandfather who liked playing tricks on his grandchildren. He was a member of Deer Park Baptist Church. He was a member of the Goose Creek Rural Volunteer Fire Department where he served as secretary treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Goose Creek VFW. He was a mason of the Masonic Lodge 401 of Goose Creek. He is survived by two sons, Joseph Dale Matthews (Barbara) and Steven “Steve” L. Matthews (Vickie), two daughters, Joyce M. Runion and Lisa Dawn Matthews who was the apple of his eye, two sisters, Annie Wilson Matthews Driggers and Sara Matthews Marchman; ten grandchildren, Kara Matthews Gilbert (Don), Jordan Matthews Johnston (Kurtis), Elizabeth Matthews, Tyler Matthews, Jason Matthews (Amber), Justin Matthews (Chris), Corey Matthews (Kim), Joshua Green, Crystal Nagel (Chris), Paige Matthews; 11 great grandchildren: Avery, Riley, Wylie, Selena, Eddie, Emma, Noah, Alex, Jeana, Jana and Reagan. He was predeceased by his wife Cora M. Poston Matthews, two sons, Wayne R. Matthews and William “Bill” Larry Matthews (Susan), his parents Coolie Matthews and Fannie Matthews; eight brothers, Winslow Matthews, Cole L. Matthews, Covington Matthews, Woodrow Wilson Matthews, James Caleb “JC” Matthews, David Bruce Matthews, Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Matthews, L.M. Matthews and three sisters, baby Matthews, Ruth Matthews and Sophie Ann Matthews Grimes.
