William Stewart Nelson

William Stewart Nelson ninety-three of Charleston was called home to be with his Lord on September 27, 2014. Relative and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Boone Hill Methodist Church, 801 Boone Hill Road, Summerville, S.C. 29483 on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 12 o’clock PM. Bill was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on December 10, 1920, to the late William Nelson and Ruth Stewart Nelson. His is preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice P. Archer, his daughter, Gayle Bulwinkle, and his sister, Marian Kelliher. Bill was a U.S.N. Veteran who joined the Navy in 1941 and served as a Radioman aboard the U.S.S. Lanier (APA-125), U.S.S. Sicily (CVE-118), U.S.S. Roosevelt (CVA-42), U.S.S. Kulagulf (CVE-108), U.S.S. Compton (DD-705), U.S.S. Grainard (DD-706), and U.S.S. Greenwood (DD-769). After his retirement in 1961, he served an apprenticeship as a boiler maker and worked as a ship fitter and pipe fitter in the civil service. He was also employed by the Dade County Park Gun Range in the maintenance department. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Fleet Reserve. Bill is survived by his daughter, Linda Sprague, and son-in-law, Ashton Sprague, of Charleston, Granddaughter, Kathryn Smoak, and her husband, Todd Smoak, of Charleston, Granddaughter, Kimberly Peterson, and her husband, Matthew Peterson, of Louisville, KY, and three great grandchildren, Ashton Blasius Smoak, Mary Kathryn Smoak, and William Grant Peterson. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Sherman, of Oregon, four nieces, and two nephews. Bill will be remembered as a devout Christian, loving and faithful husband, and devoted father. He was a humble and caring man who enjoyed and valued his many friends. The family sends special thanks to Richard Lord who became Bill’s guardian angel driving from Summerville to West Ashley each Sunday to take him to church and out to lunch. Bill also wanted to thank his long time friends, Dan and Crissy MNerney and their family, his family at Boone Hill United Methodist Church for their comfort, support, and cards of well wishes, and Hattie Grooms for her daily phone calls. The family wishes to also thank Dr. Harold Nicolette and his staff, Dr. Graham Scott, Dr. Edward Morrison, Dr. W.C. Geils, and Michelle Graves and Pandora Stokes of Hospice of Charleston.
