Carolyn lived a long, full life. She was born on December 20, 1928 in N. Charleston, SC, daughter to the late Lucille Knight and Homer Godfrey. She grew up in Summerville, SC and attended school near there. She graduated from North Charleston High School and attended Newberry College shortly before getting married. Carolyn met her sweetheart, Bert, when she was 20, and they married on October 21, 1949; their marriage would span 72 incredible years. Carolyn was a homemaker and had her hands full with a husband and five children to care for. Carolyn is survived by her husband Bert, 98, and their five children: Theresa Farris Dacar (and husband, Tom) of Cullman AL, Hugh Albert Farris Jr. (and wife, Terry) of Summerville, Elizabeth Farris Dettrey (and husband, Joe) of Charleston, Kenneth John Farris (and wife, Connie) of Charleston, and David Godfrey Farris (and wife, Vickie) of Summerville. She leaves behind her grandchildren: Theresa’s family: Renee Chmura (and husband, Zephyr); Hugh’s family: Daniel Farris and Allison Alsuradi (and husband, Feras), Eric and Richard Blair; Elizabeth’s family: Michelle Ivy (and Russell Duke), Ryan Ivy (and wife, Allison), Nathan “Aiden” Ivy (and wife, Danielle); Kenneth’s family: Keely Farris, Joe “Little Joe” Farris, William and Catherine Heckman and Logan Sykes; David’s family: Jacob Farris, and Julia Farris. Carolyn had 16 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She adored all of the children and loved cradling them as babies. She leaves behind many other relatives and dear friends all of whom will greatly miss her. Carolyn was a much-adored and respected wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great-grandmother, friend and matriarch whose family was her priority. She cherished spending time with adults and children alike, all to whom she loved to tell stories and to laugh with. She was a charming hostess and always made time for anyone who came to her house or called. She was known for her food and desserts, and any meal made by her felt special and comforting. She was famous for her recipes; her “Carolyn’s Potato Salad” and “Grandma’s Salad” were always in demand. Carolyn was a self-taught painter; she thoroughly enjoyed painting and excelled at it. Her works are proudly displayed in her family members’ homes. She was passionate about wellness, always reading about nutrition and researching the latest science. She had many hobbies, among which were growing and displaying fresh flowers and connecting with friends from near and far. She was a Christian and shared in her faith through bible study and her daily life. She respected everyone’s beliefs and had a space in her heart for each person’s point of view. We remember her for her warmth and kindness, but we wouldn’t be here without her reliability and seriousness in times of difficulty. Her big heart, strong will, and sparkling presence will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Carolyn will be dearly missed, but we are so grateful for her life and for the time we got to spend with her. Her life and her presence live on in our hearts.
