James Miles Friar Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

James Miles Friar, Jr., 78 of Summerville, husband of Terrie Friar passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022. Family and friends are invited to attend his gathering on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 3 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. The memorial service will be at 4 o’clock in the chapel. James was born on January 3, 1944 in Florence, SC. He attended University of South Carolina (Phi Delta Kappa), Charleston Southern University (BS 1973), and Webster College (MA 1976). He married the love of his life, Terrie July 8, 1977 in Summerville, SC. Jim spent most of his career in radio, television, advertising, and magazine publishing 1962-1989. He owned his own advertising agency from 1974-1987 then went to work as Economic Development Director for Dorchester County September, 1989, earned his CED, CEcD, and EM classifications, and retired from that position in 2009. He was a volunteer with SCORE for several years. He taught business classes at Charleston Southern University and Webster University. He was very active in several community organizations, including: being one of the founders of Oakbrook Summerville Rotary. He had 50 years of perfect attendance with Rotary and during that time he was club president, past Assistant District Governor, and held all club offices, was honored with Rotarian of the Year, chaired many committees, was a five-time Paul Harris Fellow, and was a Rotary Leadership Institute trainer. He was one of the founders of the Summerville Dorchester Museum, was active with the Boy Scouts of America where he was awarded his Eagle Scout Badge, the Silver Beaver, District Award of Merit, Community Organization award, Scouters Training award, Order of St. George medal, was Scoutmaster for Troop 730 twice, attended 2 National Scout Jamborees, and volunteered for many years at Camp Daniel Boone with his very good friend Eddie Hollifield. Over the years he was active with several local organizations including the Greater Summerville Dorchester Chamber of Commerce, and DREAM. Jim had his private pilot’s license, enjoyed flying, aerial photography, playing golf, and loved to hike and camp. Survivors include in addition to wife, Teresa (Terrie) of forty-five years; Son, Eric Friar (Hope) of Summerville; Two brothers: Russell Friar of Prosperity and Tom Friar (Sharon) of Knoxville, TN, Four nephews, one niece, four great-nephews and two great nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, James M. Friar and Nannette Russell Friar and his sister-in-law Sheila Friar.
