She was born on November 21st, 1927, in Bamberg, SC to the late James and Viola Rush. After their deaths at a young age, she and her 2 brothers and 4 sisters were raised by their special aunt, Lalla Folk, in Olar, SC. Apart from her parents, aunt, and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Pat D’Angelo; her son, Patrick D’Angelo; and 2 brothers and 3 sisters: J. W. She is also survived by numerous special nieces and nephews. Ruth graduated from Olar High School in Olar, SC then moved to Charleston, SC. She worked and put herself through The Richard Hendler Hair Design Center in June 1961 and became a hair stylist. She worked at Belk in South Windermere as a hair stylist for 5 years. In 1966, she opened her own business, D’Angelo Beauty Salon, which she operated and worked in until she was 90 years. Ruth loved running her own business and styling hair and did so for over 57 years. But, most of all she loved all the life-long friends she met in her beauty shop. In addition to working in her salon, Ruth enjoyed cooking, reading, working in her yard, planting a garden each year, and spending time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed cooking big Sunday dinners for her family and having gatherings during the holidays. She was an excellent cook and gardener. She and her husband loved to boil peanuts and put-up their garden vegetables. She was very good at gardening and could make anything grow successfully due to her green thumb. She loved to be surrounded by family and friends. She was always everyone’s “favorite” whether referring to her as aunt, friend, patient, mother-in-law, hair stylist, etc. She was a special mother, friend, and person. She was so loved and will be missed terribly by her family and friends. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff, nurses, and nursing assistants at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House who provided such compassionate and loving care the last 3.5 months of her life.
