John Russell Atkinson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

John Russell Atkinson (Russ), 75, of Summerville, husband of Bette Barrineau Atkinson, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Parkway Baptist Church located at 3670 Ladson Road, Ladson, SC 29456. Interment at Beaufort National Cemetery will be private. Russ was born in Charleston, SC, the son of Charles Norman Atkinson and Alice Pamela Wilkens. He was a Garrett High School Falcon and also studied drafting at Murray Vocational School. He served his country in U.S. Navy from 1967-1971. Russ received his HVAC certification from Pensacola Junior College in 1972 and had a life-long career in HVAC. He was employed by the Charleston County Housing Authority until his retirement in 2017. Russ never met a stranger and he made a positive impact on all who knew him. He was kind and loving, always with a quick joke to win a smile. He enjoyed music, drawing and spending time at the beach. Most of all, he loved the Lord and his family, and served both to the best of his ability all of his life. In addition to Bette, his wife of 53 years, survivors include six children: Kimberly Russell (Mike) of Charleston, Kristina Shriner (Damon) of Oklahoma, Sarah Allen (Paul) of Goose Creek, John Atkinson, Jr. of Hawaii, Suzanna Baker (Dave) of Summerville and Heather Del Palacio (Pedro) of Summerville; fourteen grandchildren; siblings, Sally Halma (Casey) of Pennsylvania and Bob Atkinson (Margaret) of Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Sam Atkinson. Flowers will be accepted, or in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkway Baptist Church.
