Margaret Barton Wheeler

Margaret Ann Barton Wheeler, 77, widow of Charles Thomas (Tommy) Wheeler III, the love of her life, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed peacefully, Saturday, September 7, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Margaret was born February 16, 1947, in Beckley, West Virginia, a daughter of Donald Edward Barton and Anna Simmons Barton, and grew up in Summerville. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 6pm to 8pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, South Carolina on Friday, September 13, 2024. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 pm, Saturday, September 14th, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 W. Third South Street, Summerville, South Carolina. Burial to follow at Parks Cemetery, US Highway 17-A (Boonehill Road). Margaret graduated Summerville High School in 1964, going on to earn degrees from Winthrop University and Charleston Southern University. She worked and mastered many jobs throughout her career, including at Westvaco and SPAWAR where she dedicated most of her years as a financial analyst, then retiring in 2018. Margaret was affectionately called “Maggie” by many. As she always said “We Love Life!” and she indeed lived it to the fullest. She cherished her years growing up in Summerville and loved to tell the many stories of her childhood shenanigans. Margaret thrived on fun and hard work. She always loved a good adventure and was passionate about everything she did be it working, shopping, or entertaining. She loved football and avidly supported the Summerville High School Green Waves and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Margaret was the ultimate fashionista. She loved wearing a great tutu, hosting football tailgate parties, playing Bunco with friends, decorating for Halloween, dancing with the self-proclaimed Doo-Wop sisters, cooking for her annual family gathering at Thanksgiving, and so much more. Perhaps the greatest thing we will always remember Margaret for was her love and dedication to her family. As a young widow, she devoted herself to raising her son, Tad, ensuring he had a proper upbringing and was provided for adequately. She loved him dearly and was so excited when he gave her four grandchildren. Margaret’s family meant everything to her, and she meant everything to them. If there was one person that she could thank now, it would be her sister, Donna. She rarely left Margaret’s side over the past few years and spent countless hours caring for her along with the support of her husband, Laurence. Just as her sister, Margaret had a heart of gold and gave so much to so many and never asked for anything in return. Margaret is survived by her son, Charles Thomas (Tad) Wheeler, IV (Christy), grandsons Charles Tipton, Thomas Kelly, and Nathaniel Cade, and a granddaughter, Anna Aileen; a sister, Donna Barton Clair (Laurence); sister-cousin, Mary Dean Davis (Hugh), brother-in-law, Donald Wheeler (Claudia), sister-in-law, MaryAnn Martin; many loved nieces and nephews, and more treasured cousins than there is room to print. Margaret is predeceased in death by her husband and her parents. Margaret was a lifetime member of Bethany United Methodist Church and supported it with her time and talents throughout the years. She was also a member of the Charles Peace Sunday School Class and enjoyed the fellowship that her class provided.
