April 17, 1950 - December 6, 2021
Michael (Mike) James Black of North Charleston, SC, finished his earthly race just as he wished, in his sleep, wearing Christmas pajamas. Today, he is celebrating his “Amazing Grace” in heaven while his beloved family, friends and co-workers long for more time but trust that one day there will a grand reunion with all the festive trimmings. A sales associate in the electrical department at Lowe’s Summerville on Dorchester Road for the past five years, Mike cherished his time with his team members and customers. Before moving to the Lowcountry, he served as store manager for seven Sports Authority stores in the Denver and mountain regions of Colorado. Mike began his retail career with McRae’s Department Store in Jackson, MS. He managed several department stores including Brandeis, Sheplers, White House and Watson’s throughout the South and Midwest. He was a graduate of Mississippi College in Clinton, MS, and, as a proud veteran, received an honorable discharge as a U.S. Army Nuclear Weapons Technician. A lifelong fan of Jimmy Buffett, Mike grilled the most incredible pork chops and chicken, entertained the neighborhood children each Halloween, and strove every day to make those around him feel seen and cherished. This past April, he fulfilled a promise to his daughters and grandchildren and went skydiving, family style. Mike was also the adored husband and comedy sidekick to his beloved wife Coni. Preceded in death by his mother Edna May Black and father James L. Black, he is survived by his wife Coni Gibson of North Charleston, brothers Gary (Jane) Black of Brandon, MS, and Noble Black (Marc Rozic) of New York, NY, sister Linda (Johnny) Niemi of Clinton, MS, stepmother Paulette Black of Madison, MS, daughters Jené (Michael) Smith of Madison, MS, Nicole Black (Stephen Boyd) of Rosharon, TX, and Jessica (Stephen) Wilson of Liberty Hills, TX, stepdaughters Gina (Blake) Stouffer of North Charleston and Greta (Clark) Walker of Wheat Ridge, CO, and grandchildren Connor Ritchey of Milwaukee, WI, Sydni Smith of Madison, MS, Evans Smith of Madison, MS, Baz Stouffer of North Charleston, and Olivia Wilson of Liberty Hills, TX, as well as treasured nieces, nephews and cousins.
