Winifred Darby Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Winifred Darby, 96, of Summerville, wife of the late Joseph F. Darby, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022. Winifred was born on May 12, 1926 in Chicago, IL, daughter of the late Mathias and Mae Riedl. She was married in 1961 to Joseph F. Darby, GMGC USN, who died in 2007. She attended St. Hilary’s Grammar school, Alvernia High School, and took classes at DePaul University in Chicago and locally at Trident Tech. She worked for Chicago Pump Company, Zenith Radio Distributors, and Fendall Company as a secretary and office manager. In 1958, she traveled to Hawaii where she worked six months for Hawaiian Airlines, and where she met Joe. She returned to her job at Fendall in Chicago until 1961. After marriage, Joe’s Navy career took the family to the Philippines, California, and back to Hawaii before arriving in the Charleston area in 1975. The family lived in MenRiv Navy Housing until Joe’s retirement, and Winifred worked for several years at the Naval Weapons Station. Since 1978, the family lived in Summerville, SC. Winifred was a member of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church where she attended daily mass. In 2011, she moved to the Mt. Pleasant area, where she became a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church on Sullivan’s Island and continued her daily mass attendance. She is survived by her three daughters: Mary Cutts (Rob), Marjorie McKinley (Kevin), and Patricia Roth (Michael); seven granddaughters: Erin Cutts, Madison Cutts, Darby McKinley, Regan McKinley, Hannah Roth, Ivey Roth, and Lainey Roth; Great Grandchildren: Lane Deas, Cooper Deas, and Collins Brooks. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie LaSota.
