Douglas MacArthur Miles

Douglas MacArthur Miles, 83, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on May 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on July 10, 1942, in Blackville, South Carolina, Douglas was the son of Franklin McCoy Miles and Bertha Still Miles. From an early age, he possessed a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic that would define much of his life. Through determination, vision, and dedication, he built a successful career as a businessman in the Summerville community. Douglas owned and operated several convenience stores throughout his lifetime, including Miles Exxon located on the corner of Main Street and Richardson Avenue in Summerville. He was also the owner of Tri-County Mining and Miles Construction. He loved real estate and remained an active real estate investor throughout his life. He took pride not only in his work, but in the relationships and friendships he built through the years in each of these endeavors. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Douglas was a longtime member of the Summerville Masonic Lodge #234. He valued hard work, loyalty, and providing for those he loved most. Douglas was known for never meeting a stranger. He loved meeting new people, hearing their stories, and making others feel welcome. He had a generous heart and believed deeply in helping those in need whenever he could. His family learned countless lessons from him, including the importance of doing what needs to be done now rather than putting things off, working hard, and always being willing to lend a helping hand to others. Later in life, Douglas found a deeper faith in the Lord that brought him tremendous gratitude, peace and comfort. Above all, Douglas cherished time with his family. Whether through simple moments together or large family gatherings, being surrounded by those he loved brought him his greatest joy. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and family man whose presence will be deeply missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Vicki Miles; his daughter, Monica Miles Moore and her husband, Jody of Andrews; his sons, Douglas M. Miles, Jr. (Tracy), William “Brian” Miles, and Richard Miles (Mary), of Summerville; and a sister, Gladys Ray of Barnwell. He also leaves behind his fourteen cherished grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Douglas will be remembered for his strength, determination, generosity, wisdom, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so dearly. A life well lived, a family well loved, and a legacy that will not be forgotten. In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private funeral service was held Tuesday, May 12.
