Edward R. Fedol

CW4 Edward R. Fedol, 91, husband of Cecile Edwards (Ceil) Fedol died July 23, 2026, at the Village of Summerville. Born in Brooklyn, New York on September 4th, 1934, Ed was raised in the Bronx. He was the son of Jacob Samuel (Jack) Fedol and Sarah Kaufman (Sally) Fedol. He attended school in the Bronx until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1951. After two tours in the far east including Korea in 1952, 1953 and 1954, Ed was honorably discharged in September 1955. In 1955, he participated in Operation Wigwam, a nuclear test explosion in the Pacific. He then spent two years in the Naval Reserve. In August 1957, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army an after basic training and electronics school he worked as a guided missile repairman on Nike Ajax and Hercules missiles. Two years later he attended the Nuclear Power Plant Operators Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After the one year school he operated the military’s nuclear power plants, the SL-1 at Arco Idaho, the SM-1 at Fort Belvoir Virginia, and the PM-2A at Camp Century Greenland. Discharged in August 1963, he became a control room operator at the Parr Nuclear Power Plant in Parr, SC. It was there in December 1963 he put the first nuclear power plant on the line and generated the first nuclear power in the state of South Carolina. In 1968, after the Parr plant shutdown he went to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Engineering Technician in the Nuclear Engineering Department, retiring in December 1989. In 1968, he joined the S.C. National Guard and in 1970 attended U.S. Army Helicopter flight school. Ed was the Distinguished Honor Graduate of class 70-40. He flew numerous helicopters during his flying career including the TH-55, OH-13, OH-23, CH-34, and the UH-1 A, B, D and H models. His favorite though was the OH-58 in which he qualified as an Instructor Pilot. Ed was also awarded the Master Army Aviator Badge. He was most proud of the fact that the aviation section had an unblemished safety record. Ed retired in May 1989 with more than 32 years of honorable service to the state and the nation. He also held a commercial pilots license in both single and multiengine aircraft and rotorcraft with instrument ratings in both types of aircraft. Surviving are his children: Vickie Smirnoff (Alexander), Laurie Seals (Scott) and Jack Fedol (Shawn); stepdaughters: Debra Rawls (Tim), Robin Kellam, Cindy Mitchell and stepson, Mitchell Kellam; Grandsons: Travis Young (April) and Joe Kellam; granddaughters: Heather, Ashley, Renee, Kayce, and Chelsea; Great Grandchildren: Brittney, Alyssa, Mia, Tyson, and Brandon. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 11am at Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485.
