Jane Ann Gaffney

Jane Ann Gaffney, 87, of Summerville, SC passed away on September 2nd, 2026. Jane was born on September 1st, 1939, in New Hampton, Iowa to Harvey Joseph Kolthoff and Martina Birgen Kolthoff. She grew up and attended schools in New Hampton, Iowa and enjoyed leading the marching band, office education and dancing. She also enjoyed baking with her mom, helping her dad at his office and playing baseball with the boys. She had two children with her husband, Bob, whom she married on September 2nd, 1961. They spent many years together in Iowa creating a loving home and raising their children before moving to Charleston in 1981. Outside of making a home for her family, she was well connected with the Church and community and enjoyed her work as a secretary. Over the years she participated in a variety of things ~ being one of the earliest members of St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent DePaul, Women’s Guild, Eucharistic minister, and any other opportunity she had to be involved. She was also a huge supporter of Dorchester Paws, whether it was adopting dozens of animals herself, donations of supplies or volunteer hours. She enjoyed a beautiful view of birds, flowers and the Ashley River from her home of 45 years. Despite everything she did, being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother gave her the greatest joy. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Paul Gaffney; her parents, Harvey and Martina Kolthoff and her cousin Marilyn Joerger whom she considered a sister. She is survived by her brother Michael (Jeannette) Kolthoff of Spooner, WI, her children, Robin Sauter of Summerville and Christopher (Teresa) Gaffney of Ridgeville; her grandchildren, Michael and Anna Sauter, Nicole and Ryan Gaffney; and two great-grandchildren. Jane will be greatly missed by her loving family, life-long friends, and her church community. She was full of energy and love until the very end. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 8th, at 11am at St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church, 11001 Dorchester Road in Summerville. Interment will follow immediately after Mass at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road in Charleston. St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and Dorchester Paws held special meaning for Jane.
