Mary Phuong Long Schenck

Mary Phuong Long Schenck, 84, of Summerville, SC, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on December 28, 2024. Born in Saigon, Vietnam, on September 26, 1940, to Binh Long and Phung Ai, Mary grew up surrounded by extended family. She graduated from Catholic High School in 1958 and later earned an Associate’s Degree in Business. Mary went on to become a master seamstress, a self-taught cake decorator, and a passionate gardener, completing the horticulture and Master Gardener programs at Clemson University. Mary married the love of her life, Richard G. Schenck, and together they raised four children while moving frequently due to Richard’s Navy career. The family ultimately settled in Charleston, SC, in 1974. Mary’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to own several businesses, including a laundromat, an ice cream shop, and gas station, all while instilling the values of hard work and perseverance in her children. It was during this time that she deepened her faith, dedicating herself to the Lord. Mary never met a stranger and took great joy in meeting people and leading them to the Lord. She was a gifted cook, avid gardener, and cherished spending time with her growing family. As the matriarch of the family, she proudly cared for her mother in her later years, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and compassion. Mary is survived by her devoted children, Maeling Schenck, William Schenck (Melanie), Maehing Olive (Jeffrey), and Suyin George (Sonny); grandchildren, Christie (Robert), Katie, Alisa, James, Lauren (Jason), Leigh Anne, Matthew, Trevor (Sidney), Hali (Ben), Carlie (Drew), and Dalton (Zoe); and great-grandchildren, Brielle, Dalton, Parker, Jade, Sadie, Levi, Harper Grace, Brantley, John Luke, Huck, Judson, Charleigh Rose, and Winston Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and other family members. More recently she precedes her Great Granddaughter Allie Benton and grandson in-law Andrew Webb. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, SC. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, SC. Mary’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
