Michael Harmon

Michael Harmon (affectionately known as Poppa), 74, of Summerville, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro. Poppa had lived at Veteran Victory House since January 2014. Friends and family may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock PM. A Military Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 3 o’clock PM at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, 2168 Ridge Church Road, Summerville. Mr. Harmon was born on September 5, 1941 in Berkeley County, SC He was the son of the late Tupper Harmon and Lavinia (Burbage) Harmon. His stepfather was the late James H. Harmon. Mr. Harmon attended Berkeley County schools. He served his country as a Sergeant in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for Charleston County Schools. He loved to fish and hunt. Since he had a great talent as a natural comedian, family and friends loved to hear him tell stories about his fishing and hunting days. In later years, he loved to ride his bicycle every day to Hardees for breakfast. All the employees and customers there loved him and called him Poppa. When he had to enter Veterans Victory House, he was greatly missed by everyone at Hardees; and they still ask about him. Within days of entering Veteran’s Victory House, the entire nursing home called him Poppa and they grew to love him as well. All of the staff at Veteran’s Victory House became like family to Poppa, and they provided excellent care for him. Mr. Harmon was predeceased by his “old lady” Polly and is survived by two daughters: Alana Heisler (Jason) and Tammy Harmon; one son: Mickey Harmon (April); three grandchildren: Tony, Maggie and Samantha; three great grandchildren; four sisters: Diane Nettles, Patricia Rhode, Sarah Driggers and Brenda Merrill. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary McDougal, Sandra Harmon and Dennie Hall. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www.jamesadyal.com.
