Sherman W. Chappell

Sherman W. Chappell, 89, of North Charleston, widower of Mae Chappell died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Trident Medical Center. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 30, 2010 at 11 o’clock at Salem United Methodist Church, Dorchester. Burial will follow in Dorchester Cemetery. Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 3 until 5 o’clock Sunday evening. Memorials may be made to: Salem United Methodist Church, Salem Road, Dorchester, SC 29437. Mr. Chappell was born November 4, 1920 in Morehouse, Missouri, a son of the late John Allen Chappell and Pearly Belle Hull Chappell. He attended schools in Missouri. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He made rank within 3 years as Chief Petty Officer and retired from the Navy after 20 years. He joined the C.C.’s in October 1938 and served in Kansas City, Iowa and Montana. He was a Shriner and a member of the Chicora Lodge. He volunteered at Trident Hospital for 25 years and for Meals On Wheels and was member of Mended Hearts. He also worked with his community and his church. He was employed at the Charleston Navy Shipyard and retired after 20 years in 1980. Mr. Chappell was married to his wife “Mae” for 67 years; she passed away on August 17, 2010 and he was the oldest of nine siblings. He is survived by: 1 daughter: Yvonne Belle Hayes and her husband Jeff of Winter Haven, Florida, 1 son-in-law: Jay W. Hughes of Dorchester, grandchildren: Joseph W. Alcala and his wife Tera of Oviedo, Florida and Angie Renee Shoemaker and her husband Doug of Lakeland, Florida, step grandchildren: Ashley Suzanne Hayes of Boca Raton, Florida and Jeffery David Hayes of Asheville, North Carolina, great grandchildren: John Wyatt Alcala and Eli Alden Alcala both of Oviedo, Florida, brothers and sisters: Leonard Chappell of Samsonia, Kentucky, Lula Mae Chappell of St. Louis, Missouri, Donald Allen Chappell of Jefferson, Georgia and Brenda Joyce Chappell of Campbell, Missouri. He was predeceased by his daughter: Angie Rose Hughes and his siblings: 2 brothers and 2 sisters: John Alden Chappell, Elmer Chappell, Mary Delois Faughn and Anne Louise Chappell.
