Sherril Lynn Hamm Cuzzell

Sherill Lynn Hamm Cuzzell passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2026, after a courageous two-year battle of acute kidney failure. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford Lloyd Hamm Sr. and Elsie Hanson Hamm, her brother Wilford Lloyd Hamm Jr. (Petie) and her sister-in-law Marilyn Cuzzell Rasor. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles Cuzzell III, her son Charles Cuzzell IV and his wife Haley; two grandsons, Charles Cuzzell V and Jackson Cuzzell; sister-in-law Sandra Marks, nieces Lynn Sellers, Kathleen Hatfield and Megan Geiger Burnham (Matt); nephews Peter Hamm, Ryan Hamm and Jim Boddie (Paige) and her goddaughter Lanie Shuler Masalimani. She will be missed by many more including her grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. Sherril was born in Charleston on February 13, 1951. She graduated First Baptist High School and Clemson University. Sherrill met Charlie at Clemson, and they were married in July 1972. They enjoyed living in West Ashley and Mt. Pleasant until they moved to their new hometown of Summerville in 1978. Sherril was a teacher at heart and enjoyed a successful and rewarding teaching career for 31 years. She taught in Charleston County, Trident Academy, Addlestone Hebrew Academy and Dorchester District 2. She taught in The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program and traveled with her students to destinations in Washington DC and The World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. She also mentored the Math Counts program. winning many competitions. In her youth, she was an accomplished musician, playing both the piano and clarinet and continued to play the clarinet in the Clemson Concert Band. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the friendships and fellowship she developed in her book club. She loved to shop! Sometimes for herself, but many times for others. She was generous to a fault. After retirement she planned trips with friends and especially enjoyed her visits to Alaska and Hawaii. Her three favorite activities were the summer beach vacation as Wild Dunes, Clemson football weekends and watching Charlie and Jackson playing sports. She became an enthusiastic bridge player (both duplicate and party) and created a bridge family who became life-long friends. She achieved the designation as a Sapphire Life Master. She was not only an excellent bridge player and teacher, but she was also a formidable opponent in any card game, board game, backgammon and was recently leaning how to win at mahjong. Sherril enjoyed a life well lived. She was wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. Her spirit will live in our heart, and she will be missed in so many ways. Visitation will be held on Monday August 10, 2026, 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church 206 Central Avenue Summerville, SC 29485. Memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm at the church. Reception will immediately follow the service at Oscar’s of Summerville 207 W. 5th N. St. Summerville SC 29483. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the church or charity of your choice.
